David Gates

David Gates MA, D.Phil, FR Hist,S, is the Deputy Director and Senior Fellow of the Centre for Defence and International Security Studies at Lancaster University, United Kingdom, having formerly been the Ministry of Defence Lecturer in Defence Studies at Aberdeen University. One of relatively few academics who specialize in both military history and contemporary strategic studies, he holds a doctorate from Oxford University, is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and has held Visiting Fellowships at the Militärgeschichtliches Forschungsamt and Albert Ludwigs University, Freiburg, Germany, and at Gonville and Caius College and the Centre of International Studies, Cambridge University. He is a member of the Royal Air Force’s Airpower Workshop, a small panel of specialists established to support and advise the Chief of the Air Staff at the strategic level of thought on all Airpower topics. His numerous publications include several works on aerospace power and related issues.
